Bruce Birren is the director of the Genomic Center for Infectious Diseases and co-director of the Genome Sequencing and Analysis Program at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He is a leader in developing and applying laboratory and analytical methods for genome mapping, sequencing and comparative analysis. He has been involved in sequencing the genomes of human, mouse, numerous fungi and pathogens along with the human microbiome.  Dr. Birren founded and oversees the institute's Diversity Initiative in Scientific Research, which is developing a new generation of scientific leaders from underrepresented minorities, and founded an institute-wide mentoring program.
